L-DS provided site analysis, programming, code review and preliminary schematic design; included was the 900,000 SF UT Health Science Center Medical School building that houses 3,000 faculty/staff and 1,100 students. The resulting restoration work provided the opportunity to reprogram and upgrade the entire building. Site considerations included existing uses and planned new space, while conserving open space, accessibility and a provision of safeguards to avoid future facility flooding.
A number of buildings in the Center are located on METRO’s Red Line. Accessibility to the stations as well as the effect, if any, of LRT operation on sensitive medical research and testing equipment housed within the facilities was carefully evaluated. Other considerations included growth of programs, location of research stations, teaching facilities, building security, utility easements, drainage and campus image.
