This project was designed to improve movement systems for transit vehicles, passengers and pedestrians. It provided an additional benefit of greatly improving the physical environment in the CBD of the fourth largest city in the U.S.
L-DS was one of four architectural teams selected to work with civil engineers, property owners and the Downtown Management District to prepare detailed design for new street alignments, widened sidewalks, special paving, landscape treatment, irrigation systems, street furniture, lighting and signage elements. In special areas, streetscape improvements were blended with existing conditions to enhance the feeling of a contrasting downtown.
The firm’s area of work comprised of about 90 blocks including Cullen Center, a major mixed-use office complex and the campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital. Working within the context of design guidelines, an architectural planning map, reviews with individual property owners and detailed design documentation for a public bid was prepared.
