L-DS designed the eight illuminated sculptures to commemorate the 1990 Economic Summit and to provide a positive image of the event and of Houston for an international audience. Located against the Houston Skyline and the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Light Spikes provide a dramatic backdrop for Summit television coverage and a colorful focus for Houstonians as their city welcomes the world. The project was fast tracked, taking four months to fund and two days to build. The structures were later relocated to Bush Intercontinental Airport as a welcoming sign to travelers.
