The firm was selected to provide the design and implementation of approximately 50 block fronts in the Midtown, Houston vicinity. Streets in line for the HCC Midtown Blockfronts major improvements include Caroline, Holman, San Jacinto, Alabama, Almeda/Crawford, Austin, LaBranch, Berry, Francis, Winbern, Truxillo and Isabella. In this effort to improve a vibrant part of the city, L-DS worked not only with HCC but also with TIRZ No. 2/Midtown Redevelopment Authority, City of Houston, property owners and other consultants for the redevelopment of the Midtown area.
One of the precepts of the block front redevelopment effort was to provide visual cues for pedestrians and motorists of their proximity to the campus, as well as creating a consistent ADA approved pedestrian scale. A mixture of elements were used to enhance the experience and provide a user-friendly and aesthetic environment such as brick pavers, banners, wayfinding, unique ground treatment and trees.
